Park-O, University of Queensland, Ipswich

Saturday 27th November 2004
"University of Queensland & Ipswich Showgrounds" 2003 1:5,000 5m
UBD233 D3 32km SW of Brisbane CBD
17 controls 3.7km 70m climb (1.9%)
Sport Ident. I came 9th out of 41 on the long course.
Meredith Gray accompanied me - it was her second or third event. Meredith is a runner (I'm not) and she did a good job of trying to find the controls herself rather than merely following me and by about no 10 she was striding out ahead of me. Well done.
Thanks to UG, Pat Walsh and Tim McIntyre for the event and Jon Sutcliffe and QOA for the map.

"Toohey Forest" 2002 1:10,000 5m
UBD 200 J1 8km SSE of Brisbane CBD
8 controls 4.5km 200m climb (7.7%)
I think number 8 was wrong relatve to the track junction, probably a map weakness.
I went straight on 2-3 and took the streets to the right on 4-5.
Ooh! Look at the magnetic NS/EW streets at middle left!
Thanks to Alan Cox for the event, Rob Simson and Toohey Forest for the map.

SportIdent. Very hot, very dry - I couldn't swallow by number 6.
I came 12th out of 43 on the long course in 26 minutes, 5 minutes off the pace.
Hoowee! The roads run magnetic NS/EW!
Thanks to Jon Sutcliffe and UG for the map, Tim McIntyre and UG for the event.

"Limestone & Queens Parks" 2004 1:5,000 2.5m
UBD 193 J19 31km WSW of Brisbane CBD
I was the setter
I was the setter for this event. This was the second in a series of Park events, with a 4km Long and 2km Short.
Thanks to Tim McIntyre for his vetting and organisation, Jon Sutcliffe and Ugly Gully for the map, Ipswich Town Council and Central School for the use of the map.
Most of the roads in Ipswich run magnetic NS/EW.
Mid-Week Event, Changing Mountain, Mt Crosby, Ipswich
09:00 Thursday 4th November 2004
"Changing Mountain" 1993 1:15,000 5m
UBD 174 C6 23km W of Brisbane CBD
3.9 km 11 controls 210m (5.4%) climb
I think this is the first 1:15,000 map I have run on in the last three months. It's 11 years old but the only significant changes are a new road on the ridge between 9 and 10 and some expansion of the Lantana.
Clive did a superb job of cramming 10 controls and two courses into less than a square kilometre, with a walk of only 2km to plant them and collect them. The turnarounds confused a few people. Sticky hot day, despite the early start.
Thanks to Clive Pope for the course and event; Ray and George for their company on the drive; Mke Johnston, Trevor Sauer et al, QOA and Ugly Gully for the map.
Gosh look at the fencelines!
