Tuesday Training, Gap Creek Reserve

Bridget, Clive, Nev, Ollie, Rachel and Tamsin made it.

First we discussed half a dozen route choices on map snippets.

Next Clive made us run around and around while he hassled us and we memorised a course of five legs and attempted to draw them on a scrap of paper afterwards. We all did quite well except for some of us failing to remember the 4th leg; and one wanted to verbal the description instead of drawing.

Next Clive asked us to take turns in pairs to pick up a random map, run across the oval to a notional start triangle, run 10m on compass to the first control, then hand over the map to our partners and describe how we would do the first leg.

Finally we all ran out to the track we mapped last week and had a go at fieldchecking what Clive had drawn, then ran back pace-counting the 100m stages that Clive has marke don the main northward track.

4>5 right
8>9 left out to the main drag
9>10 round via the lake edge
12>13 half way there is a sneaky little track south of the building
13>14 left
15>16 left

Tuesday Training, Gap Creek Reserve

Posting a week later all I can remember is discussing a number of route choices on map snippets, and a great deal of pace-counting practice.

"Underwood Park" 2005 1:7,500 5m

Somehow I came out of 3 more or less due south and hit the double track on the ridge, thought I was at the same feature to the west, missed 4 hopelessly and relocated at 7.

Nevertheless I managed 3rd place in 38 minutes (9.5mpk) behind SuYan and Mike.

Tuesday Training, Gap Creek

We concentrated on distance estimation and other technique training rather than physical training today. Clive brought 6 challenging route choice snippets which created much entertainment - granite terrain typically.

Last week (I'm told) everyone calibrated their pace counting, so this week we tested it running on tracks. Even with my initial best guess (I hadn't calibrated) we had very good grouping, and the grouping got better with practice.

Next came an opportunity to try mapping a new MTB track which wound randomly up a hillside. Everyone made a good first effort using guesstimation only, but a compass helped to improve it and pace counting from landmark to landmark was very interesting.

Park-O, Anzac Park, Toowong, Brisbane

15:30 Saturday 3rd November 2007
"Anzac Park" 2007 1:7,500 5m
UBD 158M16 5km W of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 17 controls 4.3km 200m climb (4.7%)

I was 12th out of 55 in 39 minutes, 8 minutes behind Ollie and a bunch of young folk plus Tim and Clare. 4 of the 8 minutes was on the two long legs.

I borrowed a cheapo thumb-plate compass from UG and managed to break it in two on the flimsy placky bit before I reached the first control - punching four large holes in the map in the process.
