Fun Day, UQ St Lucia, Brisbane

All day Sunday 24th February 2007
"University of Queensland St Lucia Campus" 2007 1:5,000 5m
UBD179L3 3km S of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 15 controls 3.5km not much climb

This event was part of a University Open Day and openeing of the new Schonell bridge which is sort of visible at the eastern side of the map.

Sprint-O, Griffith University Nathan, Brisbane

16:00 Saturday 24th February 2007
"Griffith University Nathan Campus" 2007 1:5,000 5m
UBD200L8 10km S of Brisbane CBD
"Long B" 12 controls 2.5km 90m climb (3.6%)

A good run for a change although the tiny flags were tough to find at 5 and 8. 5>6 was messy because the building halfway had an enormous unmapped terrace which sucked me in because I wasn't concentrating. 9>10 I went left through the carpark; others went direct and lost time in the vague bush.

I've gone to M50 this year so I'm the youngest in the grade instead of the oldest - I was 2nd of 13 in 26 minutes 3 minutes behind Greg and a reasonable placing against everyone else who ran the same course. Notable however that ALL of the open females beat me and Anna turned in 19 minutes.

Mid-Week Event, Petrie Old Town, Petrie

09:00 Thursday 22nd February 2007
"YMCA Old Petrie" 2007 1:5,000 5m
UBD 88 B19 24km NNW of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 16 controls 3.1km 45m climb (1.5%)

A brand new map of a lovely area. The flags were small and I wasted some time in a number of circles, as did several other runners. After a warning from early runners I was very careful with nav and avoided any blunders.

I came 8th of 24 competitors with a time of 27:04, 7 minutes off the pace.

Thanks to Geoff for the map and Tony for the event.

Park-O, Bardon Forest Park, Bardon, Brisbane

15:30 Saturday 17th February 2007
"Bardon Park" 2006 1:5,000 5m
UBD158L6 5km West of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 21 controls 4.0km 175m climb (4.8%)

Another sluggish run but (sort of) reasonably well executed. I went right on 13>14 and from below had trouble finding the gully which was very small indeed, no control flag so little help there and 60 seconds lost. 17>18 I took the road but re-entered the bush early and lost some time bashing. 18>19 to the right.

I did 42:17 (10.5mpk) 13 minutes off the pace, 21st out of 65.

Mid-week Event, Anzac Park, Toowong, Brisbane

09:00 Thursday 15th February 2007
"Anzac Park" 1998 1:7,500 5m
UBD158M16 5km W of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 16 controls 4.3km 200m climb (4.7%)

I had a better than usual run in 41:42 just under 10mpk and 9 minutes behind the pace but 6th of 20 runners with only fit younger folk ahead of me.

Metro Series, Lake Monger, Perth

17:00 Saturday 10th February 2007
"Lake Monger" 2007 1:7,500 no contours
3,600km W of Brisbane
"Medium" 13 controls 4.65km no climb

This was a Scatter event; I chose the medium course requiring any 13 of 26 controls. There are only 10 controls to the east of the highway, so I decided to get most controls to the west and just pick up a couple on the way there and back. Picking up 11 controls on the way round the lake was simple and (unfortunately) boring! That betrays the problem with my loop choice: it's a long way between drinks going round the lake. It would have been much better (as the winner demonstrated) to pick up everything on the east side and dogleg over the bridge for 3 more - a distance as the ruler measures of 3.9km although a little more round-the-houses on the ground.

Thanks to Tony Simkins for the map and OAWA for the event.

Saturday, 3 February 2007

Park-O, Underwood Park, Priestdale

15:00 Saturday 3rd February 2007
"Underwood Park" 2006 1:7,500 5m

Brisways 582 J12 UBD22H8 18km SE of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 10 controls 4.5km 75m climb (1.7%)

I took 43 minutes (9.5mpk) which was a bit ordinary but I was half way down the field of 52, 15 minutes behind the winner.

6>7 climbed the hil through the bush
8>9 left round the floodway to avoid climb.

Thnaks to the Cyclones for the event and Rob for the map.
