Come and Try It, Chermside, Brisbane

09:00 Sunday 19th June 2005
"The Chermside Hills" 2005 1:10,000 5m
UBD119 E16 9km N of Brisbane CBD
"Scatter" 17 out of 19 controls 4.2km 150m climb (3.6%)

A brand new map and free entry but only 4 runners on the "serious" course. I came third in 48 minutes, 15 minutes behind the winner.

I chose to miss the two up the hill with the reservoir because Chermside Hill (the bigger hill) looked more interesting. The winner did the opposite.

My only problems were looking for 45 near the start too soon in unmapped detail that looks just like the mapped detail, and looking in the wrong gully for 39 up on the hill. I hit the gully system too high and didn't recognise the mapping of earth banks for what it was.

Thanks to Russell Hoelzl and Enoggeroos for the map and the event, Brisbane City Council for their sponsorship.

Mid-week event, Gatton State Forest, out West

09:00 Thursday 16th June 2005
"Woodlands North" 2004 1:10,000 5m
85km W of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 9 controls 4.5km 110m climb (2.4%)

Yes we were here just a few days ago! The mid-week and regular event programmes are organised quite separately by different people to the same deadline 3 months in advance.

This was not my most successful race. The terrain is vague with low visibility, so the point features proved difficult to find - a common comment from others. I wasted time in the circle at 1, 2 and 9. I veered a long way south between 3 and 4, also experienced by at least 3 others.

There was a lot of grumbling about the map being out of date, not least from Brian the organiser. Comparison with Sunday's map shows that this was not the latest version. Oops.

Thanks to Brian Coolahan for the event, Jon Sutcliffe and QOA for the map.

State Event, Gatton State Forest

09:00 Monday 13th June 2005 (Queen's Birthday holiday)
"Woodlands" 2004 1:10,000 5m
75km W of Brisbane CBD
"Red 5" 5.2km 125m climb (2.4%)

My second run on this area; the last was October 2004.

A generally good run on an excellent new (re-)map in a very nice area.

No surprises 1-2-3; aimed off to the right for 4 but overdid it, influenced by Tim McI ahead of me. Tim dragged me through 4,5,6 and I was happy for him to do the hard work. Went through the gap in the Lantana 100m north of 7 and saw Tim running 7>8 as I approached.

7 was a tragedy; going straight, I hit the complicated gully junction and got it wrong, wasting 5+ minutes hunting termite mounds on the spur to the south of the right one. I took the track to the west from 9 to 10.

I took 56 minutes (10+ mpk), 15 minutes off the pace and 11th of 31 on the course.

Thanks to Eric Andrews and Range Runners for the event, Jon Sutcliffe and QOA for the map, Lisa Daniel Alex and cousin James for their company.

Mid-Week Event, Changing Mountain, Mt Crosby

Thursday 9th June 2005
"Changing Mountain" 1993 1:15,000 5m

UBD 174 C6 23km W of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 3.75km 170m climb (4.5%)

My second run on this map; the first was in November 2004.

The long leg begins in the Start triangle; and the route choice had to be made before leaving the start. Like most others, I didn't spot the valley running SSE out of the start then the road. Instead I ran the ridge to the vicinity of 4 then the ridgelines round to the west, which worked very well.

4>5 The plan for was to follow the creek all the way round to the south but a wall of Lantana past the dam convinced me to turn north and climb the ridge.

6>7 reaching the top of the ridge half way I found a new track junction looking just like those next to 7 and convinced myself I was on that ridge. That cost me at east 5 minutes.

Thanks to Clive Pope for the event.

OY, German Church Reserve, Redland Bay

Sunday 5th June 2005
German Church Reserve 2003 1:10,000 5m
UBD246D6 31km SE of Brisbane CBD
Red 3 4.4km 125m climb (2.8%)

1-2-3 were a breeze, but luck found me no 4 on my second attempt after relocating on the hillside to the east, costing a few minutes. 5-6-7 were slow and steady then coming out of 8 it all went vague on me and I relocated on the track to the SE after battling through the green, losing a few minutes.

Runnability is no more than adequate due to a lot of junk underfoot. Navigation wasn't fast as so many of the controls were in vague areas, almost bingo. So I hardly ran at all and finished with plenty of puff left. Add a couple of mistakes and I took 64 minutes (14.5mpk) which is a bit feeble. This was 17 minutes off the pace and half way down the field for a course I was burgling; I should have done much better - but the winner on this course was over 10mpk.

Thanks to Nola and TF for the event, Russell Hoelzl and Orienteering Queensland for the map.
