Mid-Week Event, Parkinson Reserve, Logan City

12:00 Thursday 31st May 2007
"Parkinson Bushland Reserve" 2007 1:10,000 5m
UBD239N14 20km S of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 12 controls 4.8km 100m climb (2.1%)
The numbers are upside down cos that's how I drew it.
2 was sneaky - there was a control on one of the carwrecks half way there.
3 - those who used the fence as a handrail (like me) were lucky to spot the control which seems to have been further from the fence than advertised. Those who aimed right looking for the track had no trouble.
4 - those who went straight bought themselves a pile of trouble; those who aimed to the right to pick up the track (like me) spiked it.
12 - many a minute could be spent floundering in the green unless you were lucky or simply planned to go to the finish and come back.
I took 43 minutes (9mpk) 12 minutes behind a young buck and Geoff.

State Event, Woodlands, Gatton

09:00 Sunday 27th May 2007
"Woodlands" 2004 1:10,000 5m
75km W of Brisbane CBD
"Red 3" 9 controls 4.5km 115m climb (2.6%)
1st control syndrome had me veering left without a meaningful plan, looking too low on the spur and wasting a couple of minutes. Then on the way to 5 I veered right but thankfully picked up the fence.
Approaching 7 I spotted a tree shattered by a lightning strike - most impressive.
My time of 48 minutes was a very ordinary 10.7mpk, 4th out of 18 and 10 minutes behind the leader.
Thanks to Nev and Ray for their company.

Mid-Week Event, JC Slaughter Falls, Mount Coot-tha, Brisbane

12:00 Thursday 24th May 2007
"Slaughter Falls" 2006 1:7,500 5m
UBD 158 G13 6km West of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 16 controls 3.7km 170m climb (4.6%)
The numbers on the map are upside down for the usual reason.
The winner did 31 minutes but one minute separated the first 4 runners, aged 20, 20, 40+ and 60! I was 10 minutes slower with lost time only approaching 10. Several runners went too far left at 12 and went off the map. The green isn't there so there was little information to work with - I took that one very carefully. The scale also caught out a few people who overshot number 1.
An excellent course from Su Yan.

"Neurum North" 2002 1:10,000 5m
Just to the west of UBD 35 A2 63km NNE of Brisbane CBD
"Red 3" 4.9km 235m climb (4.8%)
A great map that was created 7 years ago then thrashed for a while and rested since then. Rocks, friable ground, lots of climb and dead branches everywhere made for heavy going and high K rates - Dane managed the best at 8.7mpk on Red 1.
Mine was 62 minutes for 4.9km making 12.7mpk. I was 8th out of 27 runners with Kurt, approximately one quarter of my age, 13 minutes ahead of me.
I was pleased with my run except for one or two minutes wasted at 12 which in retrospect was a major trap - after contouring from 11 I had no real idea where I was on the spur and tried to make the gully to the west of the control into the gully to the SW of the control. A rock-strewn gullied hillside was tough to relocate on.

Mid-Week Event, Moore & Anzac Parks, Indooroopilly

12:00 Thursday 17th May 2007
"Anzac Park" & "Moore Park" 1:7,500 5m
UBD 178 F2 7km WSW of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 4.5km 190m climb (4.2%)
Good use of two maps from Rod. Tiny control flags were tough to find on some of the vaguer control sites like 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12!
I came 7th in a field of 22 on the long course. A young buck did 34 minutes; I took 47.

Schools Champs, Flagstone West, Jimboomba

11:00 Saturday 12th May 2007
"Flagstone West" 1:10,000 5m
UBD 301 D17 40km south of Brisbane CBD
"Red Short" 13 controls 4.7km 80m climb (1.7%)
This was the public race after the schools champs. The numbers on the map are upside down cos I copied the course upside down. I was coming down with a cold and my run was uninspired. 6 proved hard to find, requiring three attempts and losing 2 or 3 minutes. My time of 49 minutes (10+mpk) was only 9 minutes behind the winner but a bunch of people beat me who normally don't and the winner on the Red Long managed an amazing 6.2mpk.
1 aimed off left
2 straight
3 followed the left side of the gully
4 aimed off left
5 contoured from the end of the clearing
6 don't ask
7 my only fast leg straight down the gully
9 wasted time going into the green early
10 after crossing two spurs had no real idea where I was and wasted time going high then low
A glance at the street map shows this area with a huge planned subdivision and lots of it has had the major trees removed ready for clearing.

Come And Try It, Seven Hills, Brisbane

13:30 Saturday 5th May 2007
"Seven Hills Reserve" 2004 1:10,000 5m
UBD 161 C13 5km East of Brisbane CBD
"Long Red" 12 controls 5.1km 205m (4%)
61 minutes is far too long - the winner took 20 minutes less. I wasted at least 5 minutes at 3, I suspect I was too high on the first and second goes and found it by going down to the croeek and back up. Mayeb another case of the map not quite right. They all say that eh?
I set an event here last year and it was no help to me whatsoever!

Mid-Week Event, Rocks Riverside Park, Brisbane

12:00 Thursday 3rd May 2007
"Rocks Riverside Park" 2004 1:5,000 5m
UBD 178 E4 11km SW of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 15 controls 4.3km 100m climb (2.3%)
This took me 46 minutes (10+mpk), 12 minutes behind a young buck. The controls had no flags and were tucked away so I spent a lot of time finding them - as did Dane.
On 6>7, 7>8 and 9>10 I went through the same gap in the fence three times.
Number 2 got clipped off the top of the map never mind.
