Mid-Week Event, Mandalay, Fig Tree Pocket, Brisbane

12:00 Thursday 11th August 2005
"Mandalay" 2005 1:7,500 5m
UBD198 J3 10km SW of Brisbane CBD

This was the very first use of this map, which I drew earlier this year. It was a busy day so I just collected the controls rather than running the course in order. Nev couldn't get permission for the horse club which is why the course skirts it.

My son Daniel attends the school on the map. Biambi Yumba Park and a lot of housing to the north and east were flooded in 1978.

Thanks to Nev for the event.

Club Event, Daisy Hill, Brisbane

09:00 Sunday 7th August 2005
"Daisy Hill State Forest" 2001 1:10,000 5m
UBD223 B20 22km SE of Brisbane CBD
"Long Red" 12 controls 5.6km 170m climb (3%)

A very enjoyable race, although the road runs to 1 and 2 were a boring start. Wasted some time at 2 - should have run the road to the track junction and traversed down the gully until I fell over it, but instead I ran cross country from the knoll by the road and didn't aim off. Bad.

Apparently the obviously man-made knolls at 10 were shooting butts for soldiers training for the Boer War.

I finished 5th out of 15 in 62 minutes, a result I was happy with until I discovered that the winner took 35 minutes. Maybe I should give up now.

Thanks to Rob Simson and QOA for the map, Tim Apelt and Toohey Forest for the event.
