Park-O, South bank, Brisbane

15:30 Sunday 28th October 2007
"Goodwill Bridge" 2006 1:5,000 2m
UBD 4A16 1km S of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 4.5km little climb
Control 10 was scrapped because the amphitheatre was in use. 5>6 was awkward because the OOB area was mismapped, and a large unmapped construction site between 11 and 12 was tough to get past.
I was 15th of 39 runners, 10 minutes behind the winner with just under 32 minutes, which is 7.1mpk.
Thanks Ugly Gully.

Mid-Week Event, Bunyaville East, Bunya

12:00 Thursday 25th October 2007
"Bunyaville State Forest (East)" 2003 1:10,000 5m
UBD 118L9 12km NW of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 9 controls 4.25km 120m climb (2.8%)
1 along the track then up the spur
2 straight
3 alongside the dam
4 along the track - control was 50-100m west of where it is shown, a map deficiency
5 along the track - map also did not seem quite right here
6 along the track
7 straight but found myself much lower than the control - map dodgy again
8 left along the road and track
My time of 42:25 (10mpk) gave me 5th place of 16 runners, Owen was 7 minutes faster.
Thanks to Jim for the event.

Tuesday Training, Gap Creek

Three youngsters, two oldsters and Clive.
We started with the usual warmup then a Fartlek chasing one another around the bush.
Next we talked about scanning to find controls - you need to deliberately move your head from side to side.
The main exercise was finding controls somewhere in the "circle" - they could be on any mapped feature. The youngsters had larger circles to search and this was judged well because we all finished more or less together.

Inter-Club Relays, Underwood Park, Rochedale South

09:00 Sunday 21st October 2007
"Underwood Park and surrounds" 2007 1:7,500 5m
UBD 222P8 18km SW of Brisbane CBD
Bush 6 controls 2.7km 50m climb (1.9%)
Park 7 controls 1.2km 10m climb (0.8%)
Streets 6 controls 1.8km 35m climb (1.9%)
Each team of three (must include one woman and one youngster or oldster) received two maps & clipcards and had to run six courses between them. Mat ran this bush course and street course (6 out of 10 required) while I ran the other bush course and Geraldine ran the other street; then I ran this bush course while Mat waited for Geraldine so he could run the park.
It went well and our total time was 55 minutes, 13 minutes and 11 places behind the winners. Ugly Gully won by talent and force of numbers - more than half of the teams entered.

Mid-Week Event, Mount Coot-tha Botanic Gardens, Brisbane

12:00 Thursday18th October 2007
"Brisbane Botanic Gradens Mount Coot-tha" 2003 1:5,000 5m
UBD 158K15 5km West of Brisbane CBD
"Medium" 3km (4+km) 130m climb (4.3%)
I came 6th out of 22 in 34 minutes, 6 minutes behind Mat. It's a very confusing map - the gardens must not be crossed - the course was advertised as 4.5km but is 3km as the crow flies.
Number 2 would have been easier to find if the gardeners hadn't parked their ute in front of it!

Tuesday Training, Gap Creek
16:00 Tuesday 16th October 2007
Gap Creek Reserve
2 youngsters (Bridget and Rachel), 2 walkers (Nev and Noelene) and 4 mortals (me, Jacquie, Clare, Lee) enjoyed some non-technique training with Clive's supervision. Following the usual warmup we tried some fartlek, trotting around at random in the forest; then Clive shouted out our names in turn inviting us to dart off into the bush for 100m while everyone else tries to catch you. Finally a long Hare-and-hounds: Bridget set off with a packet of flour, staying on tracks but changing direction as often as possible and dumping a handful of flour 20 double paces after each track junction. The first two or three to each junction split up to find the mark while everyone else caught up. This meant that the fastest worked hardest, but still Bridget was beaten home by half of the field who came back early; and remarkably Rachel, the only one he stayed the course, arrived soon after her.

Mid-Week Event, Rainbow Forest, Fig Tree Pocket, Brisbane

12:00 Thursday 11th October 2007
"Rainbow Forest" 2004 1:7,500 5m
UBD 178D12 8km SW of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 5.5km 75m climb (1.4%)
My 48 minutes (8.7mpk) gave me 3rd place, 10 minutes behind Gary. A number of runners who should have beaten me made mistakes, at least one at the highway crossing which can be very confusing first time through.
