Mid-Week Event, Toohey Forest, Brisbane

12:00 Thursday 29th March 2007
"Toohey Forest" 2005 1:10,000 5m
UBD200J1 8km S of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 14 controls 4.8km 200m climb (4.2%)

This course was very hard work with understory hampering progress, masking terrain and hiding controls most of the way, with a fair amount of climb.

My time of 66 minutes wasn't very good - that's 14mpk and 18 minutes behind Geoff.

4>5 vague, lost some time
5>6 north over the hil and round the track to the crossing, difficult to find, I have a feeling it was in the wrong place because:
6>7 I found myself on the spur to the east and wasted some time
7>8 aimed off left, went down the gully but not far enough, went back to the top and then down again. The trap was contouring round the broad spur on the way in.
8>9 difficult to find again
13>14 high to the right

Thanks to the Leungs for the event.

Mid-Week Event, Bergins Hill, Blackstone, Ipswich

12:00 Thursday 22nd March 2007
"Bergins Hill" 1995 1:10,000 5m
UBD 214 K19 27km SW of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 12 controls 4.5km 115m climb (2.6%)

I had a reasonable run with no errors taking 37 minutes (8.2mpk) 7 minutes behind Dane.

My earlier runs on this map have been much less successful; I think we had a better copy of the map today and I've learned what to look out for.

Thanks to Greg for the event.

State Event, Collins Creek, Jimboomba

09:00 Sunday 18th March 2007
"Collins Creek" 1998 1:10,000 5m
UBD GC1F14 45km SSE of Brisbane CBD
"Red 4" 10 controls 4.8km 125m climb (2.6%)

My time of 43:53 (9mpk) wasn't real good but as I was burgling a shorter course I was only 6th out of 31 with the winner 5 minutes ahead of me. Anna won Red 2 in 6.2mpk!

Technically this was a weak course with little to challenge me and the legs varied from easy (next to a fence) to medium (down in the gully). However one spot bamboozled a number of runners - the green gully junction between 8 and 9. I and some others anticipated trouble and took great care to look for the junction, those less lucky missed it.

Mid-Week Event, Broadwater Park, Mansfield, Brisbane

12:00 Thursday 15th March 2007
"Broadwater Park" 2003 1:7,500 2m
UBD 201 R4 12km SW of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 15 controls 4.7km 60m climb (.1%)

I was sluggish, taking 44 minutes (9.2mpk) 12 minutes behind the winner. The map's in need of an update.

Mid-Week Event, Gap Creek, Brisbane

12:00 Thursday 8th March 2007
"Gap Creek Central" ?2007 1:10,000 5m

UBD157H15 10km West of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 11 controls 3.9km 170m climb (4.4%)

Mark N hurtled round (he's been doing that a lot recently) in 39 while I was 7 places back at 55 minutes. 42 runners was our largest midweek turnout in a long time.

This is a new map to me, a nice area.

Start>1 right via track
3>4 right via track crossing
4>5 a grovel - contoured above the Lantana until I could get down then ran the stream bed
5>6 down the spur, aimed off to the right
8>9 right via the track, should have gone left via the track
10>11 direct

Thanks to Nev for the event.

Club Event, Boronia Bushland Reserve, Boronia Heights

08:00 Sunday 4th March 2007

"Boronia Bushland Reserve" 2006 1:7,500 1m
UBD259P10 25km south of Brisbane CBD
"Red" 14 controls 4km 25m climb (.6%)

Good use of small area by the Leungs... some of the control sites were very vague on the ground, I lost a little time at 3. I was 4th of 11 in 38 minutes, a not very impressive 9.5mpk, 9 minutes behind a young buck.

Mid-Week Event, Chermside Hills, Chermside, Brisbane

12:00 Thursday 1st March 2007
"The Chermside Hills" 2005 10,000 5m
UBD 119F9 10km North of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 9 controls 4.4km 135m climb (3%)

Yes the course is numbered upside down.

I was halfway down the field 17 minutes behind a stunning run by a young buck.

Start>1 right
3>4 right
4>5 straight
6 hard to find because of many unmapped features approaching it
7 two unmapped gullies but no time lost
8 OK but many folk lost time here

Thanks to Jim for the event, no thanks to En for making us use an old version of the map.
