"Mandalay" 2005 1:6,250(!) 5m contours
UBD 198 J3 10km SW of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 3.6km 30m climb (<1%)
An excellent course on a limited map I drew last year. I took 27 minutes (7.5mpk) half way down a field of 60 behind a Finn who managed 17:44 (4.9mpk).
Thanks to IA, TC and the Cyclones for the event.

Park-O, Kalinga Park West, Kedron, Brisbane

15:30 Saturday 18th February 2006
"Kalinga Park West" 2003 1:8,000 5m
UBD 140 D5 7km North of Brisbane CBD
"Long Orange" 10 controls 4.7km 55m climb (1.2%)
I was 36th out of 69 in 39 minutes (8.3mpk) the winner took 26 minutes (5.5mpk).
The course had some excellent minor route choices:
Start>1 right to second bridge
3>4 up the steps and along the road
6>7 along the road then across the bridge and through the green (bad choice as I had to go right round the cricket pitch)
8>9 left round the green
9>10 left down to creek before green
Thanks to the Cavanaghs and Cyclones for the event, Rob Rapkins for the map.

Mid-Week Event, Hemmant Quarry Reserve, Brisbane

09:00 Thursday 16th February 2006
"Hemmant Quarry Reserve" 2005 1:5,000 2m contours
UBD 162 L9 11km East of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 21 controls 4.75km little climb
Twice around the reserve with a second master map half way; many of the same control sites as last time!
As before I had trouble at the pond (number 1) but used the roads as handrails to find the similarly vague 2,3,4. I never did find 16.
I came third behind Geoff Peck (I forgive me) and Clive (argh argh).

Sluggish after finishing the previous event only the previous evening.
I finished 8th of 19 in 59 minutes (11.1 mpk, pretty slow) while the winner took 41 minutes (7.7mpk).
Thanks to The Neumanns and Enogs for the event, Russell for teh map.

Park-O, Banks Street Reserve, Brisbane

15:30 Saturday 11th February 2006
"Bank Street Reserve" (sic) 2003 1:5,000 5m
UBD 139 B16 5km NW of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 12 controls 3.1km 110m climb (3.5%)
My only problem was on 7>8 on which I went to the right but I started looking for the track down the spur far too early having mistaken which block of houses I was alongside. The splits suggest I wasted 3 minutes bush-bashing and running down the wrong track to find myself at the start.
I finished 28th out of 66 in 32 minutes (10mpk), 12 minutes behind the winner (6.5mpk).
As notes at the last event, the area of map around control 10 isn't quite right and some people lost time there by overshooting.
Thanks to the Reads and Cyclones for the event, Jon and OQ for the map.

The first in a series run by the Cyclones. The map is a little out of date; 2 was tricky and 6 hard to find. I was sluggish and took 39 minutes, 12 minutes behind the winner.
Thanks to Cyclones / Calabro family for the event, Simsons and OQ for the map.

Mid-Week Event, Gap Creek East, Mount Coot-tha

09:00 Thursday 2nd February 2006
"Gap Creek East" 2006 1:10,000 5m
UBD 137 H15 10km W of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 3.75km 205m climb (5.5%)
A brutal opener for the season, what a grovel, lots of undergrowth and spiderwebs and plenty of climb. I took 78 minutes (21mpk) with no significant mistakes. 9 out of 40 something entrants DNFed, although most were novices on the short course which was 2.5km and would have been a killer.
But it was a good course although as Mike said later the last control was a bit of a heartbreaker!
Thanks to the Burridges for the event, Clive for sugesting they make the course shorter, and CP for the map.
