Park-O, University of Queensland at St Lucia, Brisbane

15:30 Saturday 25th November 2006
"University of Queensland" 1:5,000 2m
UBD179L4 4km SSW of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 17 controls 4.5km not much climb
A series of recent Park-O events using the new map standards have led a to a general improvement of relevant skills for everyone I suspect.
Despite considerable map complexity I was more confident on all legs (including the first) and ran well, still managing no better than 26th in a field of 52. My time of 32:59 is a good (for me) 7.3mpk but 9 minutes behind the winner. Comparing splits with fast competitors showed that I was generally a few seconds slower on every leg.
My only problem was at 10 where my pre-loved map had lost so much ink I struggled with the context of the control site.

A slightly better result, 22nd of 53, 32:43 is a fast 6.6mpk.
Lots of people took 10-15 seconds longer on their second crossing of the bridge...

Mid-Week Event, Banks Street Reserve, Ashgrove, Brisbane

"Bank Street Reserve" 2003 1:5,000 5m
UBD139B16 5km NW of Brisbane CBD
"Long Scatter" 18 controls 3km 105m climb (3.5%)
The rubric was to clip 18 out of 20 controls, but the controls were marked on two different maps, and we could take out only the first map, then the second map.
Carefully folding my 1st map to obscure number 7 (SE corner) I decided to be canny and memorise the location and numbers for 6 and 8 (east and south edges of map), tour the rest in clockwise order; then picked up the 2nd map, again ran clockwise but missing 9 and 8 (northern part of map) and picking up the two memorised controls. This saved me 500m and brought me home in 31 minutes, easily beating the field.
I actually ran past number 7 and wondered what it was doing there. Disqualified! At least I won the Short course, which required only 15 clips.
Thanks Jim for the event.

"Long Red" 4.25km 30m climb (.7%)
An excellent course with plenty of opportunities to blunder taken up by many runners, but I did OK with only a little trouble finding 9. My time of 31 minutes (7.3 mpk) was 10 minutes behind the winner and 24th of 61 runners.
