"White's Hill" 2003 1:10,000 5m

"Long" 3.6km 155m climb (4.3%)

A fun and uneventful run which took me 38 minutes, about 6th behind a bunch of young bucks. A good course, if a little heavy on track running.

Park-O, Rocks Riverside Park, Seventeen Mile Rocks, Brisbane

15:00 Saturday 19th November 2005
"Rocks Riverside Park" 2004 1:5,000 5m
UBD 178 E4 11km SW of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 3.7km 160m climb (4.4%)

I enjoyed my run - the course was very good use of the map, albeit with some technical weaknesses.

Start>1 I had a good split (9 seconds) because I didn't bother looking at the map!

1>2 along the flat, up the track, and back to the control. I thought that was a good fast route choice until I saw Tim's split 1 minute faster - he climbed early.

5>6 wicked dogleg with which the setter was not happy.

10: sorry my scrawl obscures it but it turns out there are two very similar features 20m apart, one mapped and the other not. The control was on the unmapped one. This cost me no time but others lost a minute or two.

0:09 3:47 0:42 3:14 4:53 4:23 1:27 1:35 2:06 2:17 3:12 2:31 0:58 0:28 2:08 0:38 1:28 1:30 0:26 elapsed 37:52.

I came 15th of 45, 8 minutes behind the winner.

Thanks to Mathieu McGuire for the event, Jon for the map.

Mid-Week Event, Gap Creek Reserve, Mount Coot-Tha, Brisbane

09:00 Thursday 17th November 2005
"Gap Creek East" 2004 1:10,000 5m
UBD157 H15 10km W of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 10 controls 4.5km 150m climb (3.3%)

It seemed steeper and was hard work, largely because John wasn't shy about taking us through the green and it was greener than mapped. The course was excellent and very challenging for all - I ran very accurately to finish in 60 minutes which is a rather slow 13 minutes per km. Others including a few who should have beaten me made mistakes and I think I was 3rd or 4th overall.

My only wasted time was a few seconds at 7 where my drawn circle obscured relevant detail, and a minute at 5 which I found very odd - possibly a map inaccuracy.

Start>2 Straight
1>2 to the right
2>3 left to the gully crossing then all the way up the track
3>4 track
8>9 through event centre

Mark Nemeth won in 45 minutes.

Thanks to John Cooper for the event, Clive for the map.

I had a good if exhausting run with no significant errors.

Score Event, Chancellor Park, Sippy Downs, Sunshine Coast

09:00 Sunday 6th November 2005
"Chancellor Park" 2005 1:10,000 no contours
UBD SC 78 P17 83km N of Brisbane CBD
90 minute score event, 27 controls, 8.4km, minimal climb

I was half way round before I remembered that I had 90 minutes to get all the controls, not 60 minutes, and reliased I was going to get them all. 8.4km as the crow flie means close to 10km on the ground which took me 72 minutes. I visited all control sites but one turned out to be a trick question and I simply counted wrong for the control right next to the event centre so I was denied full points score. That left me in second place behind someone with the same points but 11 minutes less, and I beat all the young bucks!

My only real problem on the course was running straight past one control site. My route was
Start 31 33 41 44 52 45 51 60 46 70 80 110 35 50 61 62 111 48 90 47 63 30 43 40 42 34 32 Finish. Had I known that at the western edge of the map it was easy to get form 44 to 51 off the map might have gone that way.

Thanks to Sunshine Orienteers and Gordon Howitt for the map, Jon Lees for the event.
