A new map sponsored by the land developers Delfin. The rubric was to clip all but ?one control and I chose 13 at the SE corner. I took 50 minutes (9mpk) and came 8th of 23; Steve won in 36 minutes.

Oceania Day 6, Humpy Bumpy

9th January 2009
"Humpy Bumpy" 2008 1:7,500 5m
Somewhere near Timaru
"M40AS" 17 controls 3.23km little climb
12mpk isn't very impressive on flat terrain; Owen led from the beginning and took 8 minutes out of me to put me into 2nd of a field of 7. WinSplits says I only won two legs. I had trouble finding 5 which cost 2+ minutes; 15 and 16 were similar.

Oceania Day 5, Craigieburn

7th January 2009
"Craigieburn" 2008 1:10,000 5m
Sort of near Timaru, New Zealand
"M40AS" 15 controls 4.1km 165m (4%)
What a grovel. Nobody enjoyed this one. The terrain is just as bad as it looks on the map.
But at least I won, because I made no significant errors. I won only 4 legs but took the lead from Owen when he royally screwed up number 11. WinSplits says I lost a minute or so at 6 - the spur is heavily vegetated and I just couldn't find the feature, a tiny patch of bare earth marked with a brown blob.

Oceania Day 3, Lincoln University, Christchurch, NZ

5th January 2009
"Lincoln University" 2009 1:4,000 5m
Christchurch, New Zealand
"M40AS" 12 controls 2.2km no climb
My battle with Owen continued at the sprint where I won 5 legs but he won 11 to beat me by 2 minutes. My time of 17:43 put me in second of a field of 6 with a rate of 8.1mpk. Winsplits says I lost time at 14 which may have been route choice - I went left round the big building, maybe I should have gone right.

Oceania Day 2, Brayshaw Park, Blenheim, NZ

Sunday 4th January 2009
"Brayshaw" 2008 1:5,000 2.5m
Blenheim, New Zealand
M40AS 14 controls 2.9km little climb
The second event of the carnival. I walked Daniel round his course then ran my own, which I must confess gave me a small advantage. The river is ankle deep but we had to cross it six times...
I took just under 27 minutes (9.3mpk) comfortable beating all of the other self-selected also-rans except for Owen whose genetic advantage over the rest of us was very obvious.
Despite being only 3 minutes behind Owen, WinSplits says I won only leg (9-10) possibly because I recognised the control site to be a tall tower and just looked up for it ahead. My dopiest leg was 2-3 where I was 30 seconds behind. I recall taking that leg through vague vegetation very carefully.

Oceania Day 1, Canaan Downs, NZ

3rd January 2009
"Canaan Downs" 2008 1:10,000 5m
Temuka, New Zealand
"M40AS" 10 controls 4.4km 175m (4% climb)
I won three legs and led the field until control 5 where I lost 15 minutes staggering around in thick bush too high up the spur. My mistake was imagining that I would be able to find the depression easily but it was a jungle. Finding the terrain into 6 very difficult to read, I went slowly and lost another 5 minutes, passing the lead to Owen who held it to the end.
