Mid-Week Event, Toohey Forest, Brisbane

12:00 Thursday 6th April 2006
"Toohey Forest 7" 2005 1:10,000 5m
UBD 200 J1 8km S of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 10 controls 4.5km 180m climb (4%)
Start>1: Along the road to the NE then along the track / fenceline almost to the control. A very reliable introduction to a complex map / area, and plenty of chance to plan the next leg. A little longer than a more direct route choice but less climb.
1>2: Up onto the spur, track to the motorway, along the motorway. This control may have been mis-sited in a complex area but I was lucky enough to find it on the way in to where I expected it to be. Good planning, not good luck, in fact, as I went in early and traversed through possible sites.
4>5: Via tracks to the left. I considered going right but decided it could be messy and arduous.
5>6: After the track junction it all went very vague and I found the right gully by sense of smell. Maybe I should have used the indistinct track.
I came second in 51 minutes, 11 minutes behind Geoff Peck. A couple of people who should have / might have beaten me didn't, one because control 2 was possibly in the wrong place.
Thanks to the Coxes for the event, Simsons and OQ for the map.

Mid-Week Event, Kindilan Outdoor Education Centre

12:00 Thursday 39th March 2006
"German Church Reserve" 2001 1:10,000 5m
UBD 246 D2 31km SE of Brisbane CBD
"Long" 11 controls 4.6km 130m climb (2.8%)
Very good use of a limited area. This course was much more challenging than it looks, possibly because of reduced visibility in the forest.
4 nearly had me - I nearly passed by because I was too low and couldn't make out the gullies which as shown on the map start above the marshy area.
I took 47 minutes (10mpk) Geoff Peck did a stunning 37 minutes.
Thanks to Rod for the event, Rob for the map, Nev for the lift, Tamsin and Ray for the company and the Guides for the venue.
